Square Bar Material, Sizes & Supply Conditions
Square bars are solid metal bars with four equal sides. They are specified by material grade, side dimension, length, tolerance and delivery condition. Selection depends on the mechanical, machining and corrosion-resistance requirements of the finished component.

Square Bar Quick Facts
Product overview
What Is a Square Bar?
A square bar is a long, solid metal section with four equal-width sides and approximately 90-degree corners. Unlike a round bar, which is specified by diameter, a square bar is normally identified by its side dimension. Its flat faces make it suitable for clamping, fabrication and the machining of components with rectangular features.
Square bars can be produced using hot-working or cold-finishing processes, or by machining larger stock, depending on the metal and order requirements. Surface finish and dimensional tolerance therefore need to be specified rather than assumed. The choice between square, flat, and round bars should follow the drawing and intended processing method.

How to Specify Square Bars & Rods
For an accurate enquiry, identify both the required material and the finished bar geometry. A square shape alone does not define the alloy grade, strength or inspection requirements.

Square Bar Specifications
Requirements vary with the material, production process and applicable standard. The following checklist helps define an enquiry without assuming a universal size or tolerance range.
| Parameter | What to specify |
|---|---|
| Cross-section | Solid square bar; side dimension and corner condition |
| Material | Grade, designation, heat number and applicable product standard |
| Dimensions | Side size, ordered length, length tolerance and quantity |
| Dimensional acceptance | Agreed side tolerance, straightness, corner radius and surface condition |
| Delivery condition | As rolled, cold finished, annealed, heat treated or other specified condition |
| Documentation | Inspection certificate, test results and traceability as required by the purchase order |
| Additional services | Cutting, machining, grinding or special inspection subject to confirmation |
Square Bar vs Round Bar vs Flat Bar
| Bar type | Cross-section | Common selection reason |
|---|---|---|
| Square bar | Four equal sides | Flat-faced clamping, machined blocks and brackets |
| Round bar | Circular | Turned parts, shafts and pins |
| Flat bar | Rectangular, with width typically greater than thickness | Plates, strips, supports and fabricated parts |
These are geometric descriptions; suitability depends on the grade, load case and drawing requirements.
Square Bar Applications
Square bars are commonly used as raw material for machined and fabricated parts. Applications may include brackets, support blocks, fixtures, tooling components, frames and other industrial parts. The material grade and condition must be selected according to the service environment, required strength and manufacturing process.
For projects requiring a different surface or production route, compare hot-rolled bar, cold-rolled bar and bright bar. These links describe product-processing categories; confirm the applicable cross-section before ordering.
Pricing and Availability
Supply, dimensions and pricing depend on the selected material, bar size, required quantity and processing condition. Provide a complete specification for an accurate quotation.
Export Enquiries
International orders should identify the destination, delivery terms, inspection documents, packaging requirements and requested delivery schedule. These details should be confirmed before order placement.
Frequently asked questions
Square Bar FAQs
What is a square bar?
A square bar is a solid metal product with four equal sides and a square cross-section. It is generally specified by the side dimension, length, grade and supply condition.
How are square bars measured?
Square bars are measured by their side dimension across two opposite flat faces, not by diameter. Length, tolerances, corner condition and straightness may also need to be stated.
What is the difference between a square bar and a flat bar?
A square bar has equal side dimensions; a flat bar is typically wider than it is thick. Both may be supplied in different materials and conditions.
Are square bars always hot rolled?
No. Depending on the grade and product requirement, square bars may be hot rolled, cold finished, drawn, machined or produced by another suitable route.
What finishes are available for square bars?
Finish depends on the manufacturing route and grade. Examples include as-rolled, pickled, drawn, ground or machined surfaces, subject to availability.
What details are needed for a quotation?
Specify the material grade and standard, side dimension, length, quantity, tolerance, condition, finish, testing documents and delivery destination.
