Monel round bars are nickel-copper alloy bars used for components exposed to marine conditions, process liquids and demanding mechanical service. The two grades in this category are Monel 400 (UNS N04400), a solid-solution alloy, and Monel K-500 (UNS N05500), an age-hardenable grade developed for higher strength. Grade, delivery condition and governing specification should be confirmed before material selection.

Choose the product record that matches the grade or designation in the governing document. Then confirm the product standard, size, condition, finish, tolerance, testing, and documentation instead of relying on the category name alone.
Material and product information
Monel is a family of nickel-copper alloys. In round-bar form it is used to machine shafts, valve parts, fasteners and other solid components. Its performance depends on the actual alloy, working condition and exposure. The two grades listed here are Monel 400 round bar and Monel K-500 round bar. They should not be specified interchangeably where strength, heat treatment or service conditions are critical.
Both alloys use nickel and copper as their main constituents, but they obtain strength in different ways. Monel 400 is strengthened by cold working. Monel K-500 includes controlled aluminium and titanium additions and can be precipitation hardened by ageing.
| Material detail | Monel 400 | Monel K-500 |
|---|---|---|
| UNS designation | N04400 | N05500 |
| Alloy type | Nickel-copper, solid-solution strengthened | Nickel-copper-aluminium-titanium, precipitation hardenable |
| Main strengthening route | Cold working | Age hardening, often after working |
| Typical selection reason | Corrosion resistance and general fabrication | Higher strength for load-bearing components |
| Round bar standard | ASTM B164, when applicable | ASTM B865, when applicable |
Use the product-form specification named on the drawing or purchase order. A grade designation alone does not define the necessary testing, dimensions or delivery condition.
| Grade | Common rod/bar specification | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Monel 400 (N04400) | ASTM B164 | Covers specified nickel-copper rod and bar forms |
| Monel K-500 (N05500) | ASTM B865 | Covers precipitation-hardening nickel-copper-aluminium alloy bar, rod and related forms |
ASTM B164 should not automatically be assigned to K-500; ASTM B865 is the relevant separate specification. Confirm the edition, size and heat-treatment condition required for each order.
Nickel and copper provide the underlying alloy system. In K-500, aluminium and titanium enable precipitation strengthening after a specified ageing treatment. Chemical requirements must be checked against the applicable specification and the actual material test certificate.
| Element or feature | Monel 400 | Monel K-500 |
|---|---|---|
| Nickel | Principal element; at least about 63% in typical published limits | Principal element; at least about 63% in typical published limits |
| Copper | Main alloying element, usually around 28–34% | Main alloying element, usually around 27–33% |
| Aluminium and titanium | Not intentionally added for age hardening | Controlled additions for precipitation hardening |
| Microstructure / strengthening | Solid solution; cold working increases strength | Ageing forms strengthening precipitates |
Values shown above are general grade-identification information, not a substitute for certified chemical acceptance limits.
Mechanical properties vary significantly between annealed, cold-worked and age-hardened conditions. Monel 400 is commonly selected when its corrosion behaviour and workability meet the requirement. K-500 is selected when a higher-strength nickel-copper alloy is needed, such as for shafts, fasteners and springs. The aged condition must be specified where the design depends on it.
| Requirement | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Strength | Yield strength, tensile strength and delivered temper | Published values do not apply to every condition |
| Hardness | Specified hardness range and heat treatment | Especially relevant for aged K-500 |
| Dimensional tolerance | Diameter, length, straightness and surface finish | Determines machining allowance and fit |
| Verification | Heat traceability and inspection documentation | Confirms grade and condition supplied |
Bars may be hot worked, cold worked or machined to the required size. Cutting and machining plans should allow for material strength and work hardening. Depending on the specified condition, Monel 400 may be supplied in annealed or worked conditions, while Monel K-500 may require ageing to develop its intended mechanical properties. Available surfaces can include mill finish, turned or ground finish, subject to the order specification.
Monel bars are used for components in marine engineering, chemical processing and industrial machinery. Examples include pump and valve parts, fasteners, shafts and fittings. K-500 is particularly relevant where strength and corrosion resistance are both important. Suitability must be confirmed for the actual chemical concentration, temperature, flow, mechanical loading and exposure conditions.
For other material families, see the Nickel Round Bar and Copper Nickel Round Bar categories. These are distinct materials, not direct equivalents to Monel.
Specify whether the material is Monel 400 or K-500, the UNS number, ASTM standard and edition, diameter and length, quantity, supply condition, required mechanical tests, tolerances, finish, inspection documents and delivery location. For K-500, state the required ageing or strength condition explicitly.
Common technical questions
Monel 400 is a solid-solution nickel-copper alloy that can be strengthened by cold working. K-500 contains aluminium and titanium and can be age hardened to obtain higher strength.
ASTM B164 covers UNS N04400 nickel-copper rod and bar products in specified conditions. Confirm the edition and requirements stated in the purchase order.
ASTM B865 covers UNS N05500 precipitation-hardening nickel-copper-aluminium alloy bar, rod and related product forms.
K-500 can develop greater strength after suitable ageing, but actual properties depend on size and condition. Compare certified mechanical values for the proposed materials.
Monel alloys can resist many marine environments, but service suitability depends on temperature, water chemistry, flow, stress and other conditions. Verify against the intended application.
Not automatically. Chemical composition, strengthening mechanism, product specification and mechanical properties differ. Follow the approved design and material specification.
