Material guide
What Is a Hot Rolled Round Bar?
A hot rolled round bar is a solid cylindrical metal bar formed by passing heated metal through rolling equipment. Rolling above the recrystallization temperature makes the metal easier to shape and allows bars to be produced in a range of diameters. The finished surface may show mill scale and does not necessarily have the smooth finish or close dimensional tolerances of a cold-finished bar.
Hot rolled round bars are used as starting material for shafts, machine components, fasteners, fabrication and forging, depending on the grade. Mechanical properties depend on the alloy, processing history, cooling rate and any specified heat treatment. Hot rolling and cooling in air do not, by themselves, establish a certified normalized condition. Buyers can compare cold rolled round bars and bright round bars when tighter dimensional control or smoother finishes are required.

How to specify Hot Rolled Steel Bars & Rods
Start with the product form and drawing dimensions. Specify the material grade separately, then agree the standard, condition, finish, tolerances, testing and documentation required for the order.

Product overview
Hot rolling produces round bars by shaping heated metal through rollers. The process is commonly used to prepare stock for machining, fabrication or further processing. The surface of an as-rolled bar may carry oxide scale, which can be removed by pickling, peeling, grinding or other finishing methods when required.
Hot rolled bars can be supplied in different materials and conditions. A specified normalizing, annealing or solution-treatment operation is separate from the rolling process and should be stated on the purchase order when needed. Compare the round bar product range or request a quotation with your grade, drawings and inspection requirements.
Material options for hot rolled round bars
Hot rolling practices and available bar dimensions depend on the alloy and producer. The links below help you explore materials; they do not imply that every grade is available in every hot rolled size.
- Stainless Steel Round Bars — for corrosion-resistant engineering uses
- Carbon Steel Round Bars — for general engineering and fabrication
- Alloy Steel Round Bars — for specified strength and hardenability
- Duplex Steel Round Bars — for selected corrosion-resistant applications
- Super Duplex Steel Round Bars — for demanding chloride environments
- 253MA Round Bars — for specified high-temperature service
- AL6XN Round Bars — for selected corrosion-critical duties
- Custom 450 Round Bars — for high-strength stainless steel components
- Jethete Round Bars — for specialized high-strength components
For other alloys, including nickel alloys and titanium, confirm the actual manufacturing route and delivery condition rather than assuming hot rolling is applicable.
Pricing and availability
Pricing and lead time depend on the grade, diameter, length, quantity, delivery condition and test documentation. Send the technical requirement for confirmation; stock and size availability should not be assumed from a general product list.
Export enquiries
For export orders, include the destination, required packing, marking, documentation and delivery terms along with the material specification.
Hot Rolled Round Bar specifications
The values below describe ordering considerations and indicative ranges from the previous product listing. Final tolerances, sizes and acceptance limits must follow the selected grade and applicable product standard.
| Specification item | What to confirm |
|---|---|
| Material and grade | Carbon steel, alloy steel, stainless steel or other grade as stated on the purchase order |
| Applicable standard | Specify the correct material and product standard, edition, and delivery condition for the chosen grade |
| Hot rolled round bar diameter | 16–125 mm listed in the original product range; confirm grade-specific availability |
| Standard lengths | 3–6 m in the original listing; cut lengths by agreement |
| Surface finish | As-rolled/black; pickled, peeled or ground only if specifically agreed |
| Dimensional tolerances | Agree diameter, length, straightness and permissible deviations to the relevant standard |
| Heat-treatment condition | As-rolled, normalized, annealed or another specified condition where applicable |
| Inspection documentation | Mill test certificate and inspection/testing reports as required by the order; specify EN 10204 3.1 where applicable |
| Additional processing | Cutting, machining, straightening, peeling or grinding subject to enquiry |
Hot rolled round bar and bright-finished bar are not interchangeable manufacturing descriptions. Specify any cold finishing or precision tolerance separately.
Applications and uses
The appropriate applications depend on the steel grade, dimensions and service requirements. Common uses for suitably specified hot rolled bars include:
- Shafts, pins and machine components
- Forging blanks and machining stock
- General industrial and structural fabrication
- Equipment components for chemical and processing plants
- Power-generation and maintenance components
- General engineering spares and manufactured parts
For demanding corrosion, pressure or elevated-temperature service, grade selection and design acceptance should be checked against the relevant engineering specification.
Product questions
Hot Rolled Round Bar FAQs
What is a hot rolled round bar?
It is a solid round metal bar shaped through rollers while the metal is hot enough for easier deformation. The final properties depend on the grade and delivery condition.
What is the difference between hot rolled and cold rolled round bars?
Hot rolled bars are shaped at elevated temperatures and often have an as-rolled scaled surface. Cold rolled or cold-finished bars undergo additional processing, generally offering smoother surfaces and tighter dimensional control.
Does hot rolling mean that a bar is normalized?
No. Normalizing is a specified heat-treatment process. Cooling after hot rolling is not sufficient evidence of a normalized delivery condition.
Which steel grades are available as hot rolled bars?
Carbon steels, alloy steels and selected stainless steels are common options. The manufacturing route and stock dimensions must be confirmed for the exact grade.
Can hot rolled bars be supplied with a smooth finish?
Additional processes such as pickling, peeling or grinding may improve the surface condition. Request the needed finish and tolerances when ordering.
What information is needed for a quotation?
Send the grade, product standard, diameter, length, quantity, condition, tolerance, test documentation, finish and destination.
