Product overview
What Is a Flat Bar?
A flat bar is a solid metal product with a rectangular section and two broad, flat faces. Unlike a round bar, which is measured mainly by diameter, a flat bar is ordered by width, thickness and length. It can be used as a finished stock form or machined into a component.
Depending on the alloy and specification, flat bars may be produced by hot rolling, forging, slitting from suitable stock or further machining and finishing. Surface condition, corner geometry, dimensional tolerances and mechanical properties must be confirmed for the specified material and manufacturing method.

How to Specify Flat Bars
Send a drawing or a complete purchasing description. A material name alone does not define the finished bar or its acceptance requirements.

Flat Bar Specifications and Supply Details
These are purchasing information fields, not guaranteed dimensions or tolerances. The controlling standard and achievable supply range must be confirmed for the chosen grade.
| Requirement | What to specify |
|---|---|
| Product form | Solid flat / rectangular metal bar |
| Material and standard | Exact grade, product standard and edition; requirements vary by alloy |
| Section dimensions | Width × thickness (mm or inches) and required length |
| Dimensional tolerances | Width, thickness, length, straightness, flatness and edge requirements, as applicable |
| Processing and finish | As-rolled, pickled, annealed, ground, polished or machined, subject to material and availability |
| Quantity and processing | Number of pieces or total weight; cutting or machining requirements |
| Inspection and documentation | Material test certificate (such as EN 10204 3.1 when specified), PMI and third-party inspection if required |
| Delivery | Packing, destination, schedule and traceability/marking requirements |
Hot Rolled vs Precision-Finished Flat Bar
| Characteristic | As-rolled flat bar | Further-finished flat bar |
|---|---|---|
| Surface | May retain mill scale depending on material and condition | May be pickled, ground or machined to the agreed finish |
| Dimensions | Controlled by the relevant hot-worked product specification | Can be finished to tighter requirements where feasible |
| Typical next step | Fabrication, welding or additional machining as permitted by the grade | Precision fabrication or machined components |
For process-specific details, see hot rolled bar and bright bar. These pages cover other product forms and are not substitutes for a flat-bar specification.
Flat Bar Applications and Uses
Application suitability depends on the selected grade, design loads, service environment and product condition. Common uses include:
- Equipment brackets, supports and mounting plates
- Machined keys, spacers, guides and wear components
- Fabricated frames and structural details where the specified grade is suitable
- Corrosion-resistant components for chemical and marine equipment
- Industrial tooling, fixtures and maintenance components
Pricing and Availability
Prices and availability depend on grade, width, thickness, length, quantity, finish and testing. Send the complete specification for a current quotation; no universal stock range is implied.

Frequently asked questions
Flat Bar FAQs
What is a flat bar used for?
Flat bars are used for brackets, supports, fabrication, machining stock, spacers and other industrial components. The material must be chosen for the intended service.
What is the difference between flat bar and round bar?
A flat bar has a solid rectangular cross-section and is ordered by width and thickness. A round bar has a circular cross-section and is normally specified by diameter.
Which materials are available for flat bars?
Common choices include carbon steel, stainless steel and alloy steel. Specialty alloys may be available subject to grade, size and manufacturing route.
How do I specify flat bar dimensions?
State the width, thickness, length, quantity, allowable tolerances and any corner or edge requirements.
Are flat bars available with different finishes?
Possible conditions include as-rolled, pickled, ground, polished or machined finishes, depending on the material and supply route.
What should I include in a flat bar enquiry?
Include material grade, standard, dimensions, quantity, finish, tolerances, testing or certification requirements and delivery destination.
